Ambien, also known by the generic name zolpidem, is a non-benzodiazepine used to treat sleep problems (insomnia) in adults. If you have problems falling asleep, the medication helps you fall asleep faster, so you can get a better night’s rest. Ambien works on the central nervous system (CNS) by slowing certain brain activity, encouraging sleep in those who use it. The treatment period of this medication is usually short up to 1-2 weeks or less. The medication is available in two variants Ambien 5mg or Ambien 10 mg. Always use this drug as directed by your doctor, when taking in higher dose or combination with another drug, it can have lethal effects.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage depends on your age, medical history, other medication you may use, and the response to treatment. Avoid increasing or decreasing dose strength on your own, do not take it more often, or use it for a longer time than prescribed.

Take Ambien by mouth on an empty stomach as instructed by your physician. Avoid taking this medication with or after a meal because it will not work as quickly.

For treatment of insomnia:

Adults: 5 mg for women and 5 mg or 10 mg for men once a day at bedtime. Your health care provider may increase or decrease the dose as needed. Take only 1 dose at night if needed. However, do not consume more than 10 mg per day.

Older Adults: 5 mg once a day at bedtime.

Doctors usually prescribed a lower dose to Women because the drug is removed from the body more gradually than in men. To decrease the risk of side effects, older adults usually prescribed to take a lower dose.

If you take the medication for a longer time than prescribed, it may cause some withdrawal reactions. In such cases, withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting, flushing, nausea, stomach cramps, shakiness, nervousness may occur if you suddenly stop using it. To prevent withdrawal reaction, your health care provider may reduce your dose strength gradually.
